Where are your medical specialist located if they are not available in Mesquite?
This question comes up often and is very important. "If I need to see a specialist that is not available in Mesquite, can I go to St. George or do I have to drive all the way to Las Vegas? What you really need to find out is will the plan have "out of state" coverage and what kind of services are offered? What are your current medications?
Each plan has a different list of covered medications. This is called a formulary. Researching the formulary is very important. Medications are classified by "Tiers" on the formulary. Each tier has a unique copay. In one plan your prescription may be classified as a "Tier 1" medication with a low copay. In another plan that same medication might be a "Tier 3" medication with a much higher copay. This is where a little research can result in a large benefit. What pharmacy do you use and why is it important to know if they are a "Preferred Pharmacy"?
If you want to use a specific pharmacy, research is required to find out if the plan has contracted with them. Next, let's find out if it is a "preferred" pharmacy. Preferred Pharmacy's have agreed to provide medications at a lower price to plan members. |
Do you have any chronic conditions?
There are numerous chronic conditions that can be maintained easier with a specialized treatment program. A good example would be someone that needed to stop smoking. Would the current or selected plan have additional benefits and programs to support your efforts? Diabetes, Chronic Heart Conditions, Gastrointestinal issues, COPD, or Cancer are just some of the conditions that can be helped with a customized treatment plan offered by some providers. Are you a snowbird or do you travel outside of Nevada or the U.S. for extended periods of time?
Many of Mesquite residents have a winter home and a summer home. So it's important make sure you have options in the areas you will be living in throughout the year. The wrong plan can cost hundreds of dollars each month, and you find out after the fact that you're paying for services and coverage you don't use.
