Tax Credits, Income, or CSR Sometimes Less is More, and More is Less

This is a comparison of rates for a Couple in Salt Lake County.  These are all for the least expensive Silver plan offered by each carrier.  Don't forget that coverage levels and deductibles can change from one year to the next, so the coverage offered on last years Silver plan can be different this year

With an estimated Income of $25,000.
The couple was covered in 2017 by Molina for $88 per month.  In 2018 they can get coverage from SelectHealth for $53.00.  The tax credit has increased almost $430 from 2017 to 2018
With an estimated income of $35,000
The couple was covered in 2017 by Molina for $88 per month.  In 2018 they can get coverage from SelectHealth for $166.  What changed? the NPL so their tax credit dropped nearly $100 for this income bracket.
With an estimated income of $45,000
​The couple was covered in 2017 by Molina for $340 per month.  In 2018 they can get coverage from SelectHealth for $299.  Both the NPL and the tax credit changed, so their coverage  is $40 less this year
You're right....  It doesn't make sense.  But with the ACA and all of it's complications and mandates, This is the new reality.
